Shooting

Cadets can currently fire three different rifles, as well as air rifles where facilities exist.

The .22 No 8 rifle is where their training begins, and all cadets will receive extensive instruction, handling tests and when ready closely monitored live firing. Once they have developed confidence and experience we can begin to hone their skills, encouraging greater control and accuracy, allowing cadets to compete in competitions. The .22 rifle can be used in or outdoors, and is ideal for practising marksmanship skills.

From the age of 14 cadets may fire the L98. This is a more powerful weapon and is very different to operate than the .22, as it is a more modern and complicated weapon.

The L98 is used outdoors at ranges up to 300 metres.

The L81 is a larger weapon and has only recently returned after a 10 year absence. Cadets will shortly be given the opportunity to fire this.

All ranges are controlled by qualified and well training members of staff, and shooting teaches the cadets to listen, follow instruction and have a respect for what they are doing.

The ATC awards 4 levels of Marksmanship.
